The Wrap-Up brings you the 5 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases. This week: new releases from Noname, Smashing Pumpkins, and Lana Del Rey, remembering Mac Miller, and exciting news from BROCKHAMPTON! 1. Noname drops a new album Chicago rapper Noname dropped her much-anticipated new album Room 25 this week. The project is a follow-up to her critically-acclaimed 2016 album Telefone, and builds on her signature combination of complex, Dilla-inspired rhythms and smart, socially conscious lyrics. Noname followed up the album release by announcing a 19-date tour for 2019. Check out her Boston show on January 11! 2. Music world mourns Mac Miller Rapper Mac Miller, 26, was found dead in his Los Angeles home last weekend of a suspected drug overdose. Miller rose to prominence with the release of Blue Side Park in 2011. In the years since he has toured relentlessly and released four more studio albums, including Swimming, which was released in August and has climbed the charts since his death. He was beloved by fans for his high-energy shows, honest and often introspective lyrics, and openness about his personal struggles. Following news of his death, Chance the Rapper, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, and dozens of other fellow artists paid tribute. 3. BROCKHAMPTON signal return to whirlwind productivity BROCKHAMPTON announced plans this week for up to three albums and a documentary film to be released in the coming months. The news comes after a tumultuous summer for the band. Iridescence, due out next week, will be their first full-length album since sexual misconduct allegations surfaced against founding member Ameer Vann, prompting his ouster from the group in May. The group released three albums in 2017, cementing their place as hip hop’s most prolific and exciting young group. 4. The Smashing Pumpkins sample upcoming album The Smashing Pumpkins released a new single, “Silvery Sometimes (Ghosts),” on Friday and announced an upcoming album, their first since 2014’s Monuments to an Elegy. The single treads in familiar territory for the alt-rock veterans, whose much-anticipated upcoming project is due out in November. 5. Lana Del Rey releases a new single Lana Del Rey premiered her new single, “Mariners Apartment Complex,” on Wednesday. The song is an unlikely collaboration between Del Rey and Jack Antonoff, the prolific singer and producer. The single returns to the melancholic themes that have defined Del Rey’s most successful releases. The singer is expected to release an LP in early 2019.
