This Week on Exposure

Check out this week's picks from our Exposure staff!

Hello, BRUniverse! This is the Exposure Weekly Update. Our team has been hard at work all week unearthing the best new songs from underexposed artists for your listening pleasure. Read on to hear a little bit about each tune, and be sure to follow our Spotify playlist!

TOMBERLIN – Any Other Way Themes of introspection and self-discovery run throughout At Weddings, the strong debut album of singer-songwriter Tomberlin. This melancholy, beautiful opening track perfectly showcases the complex songwriting that makes this newcomer so exciting. PART TIME – I Can Treat You Better (Ariel Pink) Mellow, bedroom pop-y vocals and a surprise saxophone elevate this standout track from Part Time’s new LP, which also features an appearance from enigmatic and prolific LA-based songwriter Ariel Pink. SLOUCHER – Be True Seattle-based indie rockers Sloucher returned to the scene in November with a solid if predictable EP, Be True. The especially catchy hook is what sets the title track apart and makes it one of our favorites of the week. AXIS: SOVA – New Disguise Come for the driving, punk-inspired guitar line; stay for the sneeringly apathetic vocals. The second single from Axis: Sova’s latest project would be right at home on a ‘70s rock record, but the raw energy of the instrumentation keeps it from feeling contrived. LUKE TOP – The Dumb-Show A mellow blend of gentle percussion, strings, and Bon Iver-esque vocals, “The Dumb-Show” is a little-known gem from LA-based Luke Top. Unconventional and meandering, the song is a deep and complex slow-burn. VARSITY – The Dogs Only Listen To Him This new song, in which the narrator rebuffs and mocks a man’s attempts to woo her, comes hot on the heels of Parallel Person, the ten song record Varsity dropped in April. “The Dogs Only Listen to Him”‘s blend of dreamy vocals and textured instrumentation has us hotly anticipating what’s next. THE BELAFONTES – Where the City Meets the Sea Imbued with frantic energy from the very first note, “Where the City Meets the Sea” is a short burst of light-hearted fun. The song from this Australian couple is the perfect reminder that, at least in some corner of the world, it’s always beach season.
