Recorded live at the BBC in 1997 and released on the deluxe edition of Brighten the Corners, Pavement’s take on Echo & the Bunnymen’s “The Killing Moon” is one for the ages. The California-bred group take the 80s hit and apply a 90s alt-rock veneer to it, slowing down chords with distortion and stretching syllables with slacker energy. The track’s tragic mood is maintained, but in this version it comes more from the methodical pacing than the original’s dramatic vocals. An improvised verse makes reference to other Echo & the Bunnymen tracks – “Thorn of Crowns” and “The Yo-Yo Man” – but feels perfectly in place. Pavement truly make “The Killing Moon” their own, and if you didn’t know better you’d swear it was theirs to begin with.
