In honor of International workers day, hundreds of people gathered today at Providence’s Burnside Park. Michael Araujo is executive director of RI Jobs with Justice, which organized the march. He says that May Day has been key in highlighting the long generational struggle of the workers’ movement over the past 130 years, including the history of immigration and black life in America.

“The importance is that we get to reframe this as a long struggle. It’s not just Trump. It’s also the way capitalism has worked in the world over the past hundred years and the way it has affected humanity. We can focus on that during May Day,” Araujo said. The march featured 16 speakers highlighting challenges to workers rights. Today’s Providence demonstration is one of many around the world for International Worker’s Day.
