Last Saturday, fans gathered at The Met to see the four finalists of Rock Hunt 2017 perform. On the bill were The Beardogz, Black Dove Social Club, Jetty, and Rock Hunt winners Call Security.
First to take the stage were The Beardogz. The five-piece band hooked the crowd with an upbeat melody accompanied by guitarist Peter Soucy, who shredded on melodica for a few songs. Shouts of encouragement came from the crowd — “Go, Peter!” — when Peter’s brother, frontman Spencer Soucy, announced it was Peter’s birthday. The band brought warmth to the venue with “When Will I Find,” a song perfect for a day at the beach. After thanking the crowd for their votes, the band closed with “Take Time.” Following their set, brothers Spencer and Peter confessed that this was their first time playing for a crowd this large, and that they loved the energy from so many people.
After an introduction from DJ Nico, Black Dove Social Club came up to perform. This was the Cranston band’s first time playing together live! Despite this, BDSC owned the stage, dancing energetically to their distinctive hard rock sound. The band’s humor shone through in their between-song banter. Frontman Justin McGovern gave a shout-out to the BRU Crew’s table with a matter-of-fact statement: “I won a bag. I’m gonna put stuff in that bag.” The band’s cover of “Your Love” by The Outfield was a set highlight; the crowd belted the lyrics. Black Dove Social Club closed with their Hot Single “Pretty Little Things,” and ended the performance with an epic crescendo of all of their instruments at once. Guitarist Chris Piquette admitted that they had to get their set together quickly, but they worked hard and were happy with their performance. He thanked everyone for voting and predicted that after tonight, “We will probably be a real band now!”
Previous Rock Hunt finalists Jetty were next to play. When describing Jetty, you can’t help but use the word groovy. Their R&B-inspired rock elicited dancing from band members and fans alike. The band had some serious hardware onstage, including voice sampling equipment used in the song “Used to Try.” Later, Jetty opened fun jam “Up All Night” by warning the crowd that “This next song requires a bit of dancing.” That was no problem for audience members, and the enthusiasm continued all night. Jetty even gained some new fans — a man turned to his friend mid-chorus and proclaimed, “I love this song!!!” Their last song, “Go Getta Groove,” was dedicated to all the “Jetty OGs” in the crowd. After the set, guitarist Mike Spillane said that that was his favorite song to play live because everybody gets to jam and do their thing. If you came to The Met to “Getta Groove” that night, Jetty definitely brought it.
Finally, Rock Hunt winners Call Security came onstage to close out the night. Dancing during their set was irresistible. The first song built up verse by verse until it erupted during the last chorus, sending the band’s high energy throughout the entire room. Singer Ben Scheibel’s expressive dance moves inspired the audience to give back as much energy as the band was giving to them. Scheibel’s strong vocals especially stood out in songs like “Hometown Hair” and in the band’s cover of “All These Things That I’ve Done” by The Killers, during which the crowd joined in belting out its famous bridge. Finally the band played “Small Talk,” which listeners voted as the Hottest Single in this year’s Rock Hunt competition. After finishing with an encore, an exhausted Scheibel shared how it feels to perform live. All of the band’s built up tension and excitement was released, he said, and it felt surreal. He was incredibly appreciative of all of the support Call Security received, stressing that their win would not have been possible without it. He ended with a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone who voted and came to the show.
