Five people were arrested outside of TD Bank in downtown Providence yesterday. They were blockading the entrance to the bank to protest its involvement in a $2.5 billion loan behind construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota. Arely Diaz was one of the five arrested for the action, which was planned by the Fighting Against Natural Gas Collective.
“Whatever I can do to make sure that Native and Indigenous folks are being heard, that their land isn’t being exploited or taken away from them, I think it’s worth the sacrifice and the cost,” Diaz said.
The Army Corps of Engineers issued a letter stating that the protesters must vacate the land surrounding the pipeline by December 5th or face arrest. The project’s original January 1st, 2017 deadline will likely not be met.
