Last Sunday, more than 300 people appeared for a peaceful yoga pants parade in Barrington, Rhode Island. The parade passed the home of a man who wrote a letter published in The Barrington Times last week, asking women over 20 years-old to stop wearing yoga pants. Alen Sorrentino wrote that women wearing yoga pants is “the worst thing to ever happen in women’s fashion.” Sorrentino’s remarks sparked yesterday’s parade.
One of the parade organizers Jamie Burke said yesterday’s parade addressed an issue larger than yoga pants. She said the parade fought against the long history of men policing women’s wardrobes.
“It’s really sad that in 2016, we are still talking about what women should wear. It’s mind blowing that this is an issue. It needs to addressed, and this was a perfect way for me to address it in a way that I could,” Burke said.
Sorrentino said that the letter was meant as a joke. He was invited to join the parade, but declined.
