The Rhode Island chapter of the American Institute of Graphic Arts is giving female graphic designers more visibility through an event series this month. It’s called KnowHER Design Talks: a series of lectures, discussions, and exhibits showcasing the work of established and emerging female graphic designers. AIGA’s Vice President of Membership Kristin DiVona says the series is meant to address and counteract the underrepresentation of female designers within the industry. She says female designers occupy only 3% of executive positions, even though they are the majority in undergraduate and graduate design programs. “For us it was about shining light on the women who are doing great work and getting other women excited about that work,” DiVona said. Tonight at 6:30 PM, there’s a free gallery opening at the Rhode Island School of Design Graphic Design Commons (31 Canal Street). The gallery features work from professional and undergraduate designers alike.
