Introducing a kicked back indie-rock atmosphere mixed with some alternative hip-hop to our Home BRU’d Studio this week was the Cape Cod based Crooked Coast. Bringing along with them some unusual instrumentation including a mandolin and a mini drum set, they energized the room with their catchy jams. Fortunately, the band brought along some extra microphone cords so we could create the best sonic setup possible with multiple mics to capture Charles’ little kit. Starting things off with two acoustic guitars, No Caroline No, makes use of Luke Vose and Ben Elder’s background vocals to support the clear melody from John McNamara. They recently released a music video for this song, check it out on their website crookedcoast.com . Charles Walton’s simple drum set accompanies this acoustic tune very well by giving it some syncopation and drive. Next they hit us with one of their biggest singles, Go Back, that features an excruciatingly catchy chorus line that was stuck in our head for days after the session. This time, we got to hear some of Luke Vose’s rapped vocals to supplement the hyper melodic hook of the song. The mix between indie rock and hip-hop is not too common, yet Crooked Coast manages to add a unique twist on both genres. Finally we got to hear a song making use of Luke’s mandolin as a rhythm instrument. World Spins is yet another beautiful blend between alternative and alternative hip-hop that incorporates even more intricate hi-hat work from Charles Walton. All these tracks can be found on Crooked Coast’s album, Wildfire, available now! Be sure to check these guys out, with music videos being produced regularly and shows around the area! In fact, they are playing at the Thirsty Moose in Portsmouth, NH on December 3rd. Stay on the lookout!
