1. New Gorillaz album confirmed for 2016 release by Jamie Hewlett

Though cartoons are something we leave behind in childhood, Gorillaz provide us with a healthy dose of timeless animation and good music. Jamie Hewlett, the English artist behind the iconic imagery of Gorillaz, assured fans that the follow-up record to their 2010 album Plastic Beach is still slated for a 2016 release and that they will play live shows to promote the new music. Speaking to DIY about the project, he revealed:

That’s next year. I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again.

He later shared with NME that he plans to give Gorillaz “a different look” to fit the new music. Regarding the sound of the upcoming release, Damon Albarn told Rolling Stone that “it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy.” He added, “I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that.”

Nobody wants to receive an irritated emoji from Thom Yorke (though it’s pretty remarkable that he uses emoji in the first place), but Consequence of Sound now has to face the shame of receiving one from the Radiohead frontman. Bandmate Jonny Greenwood spoke to Silver Rain, a Russian Radio station, about Radiohead’s future and due to mistranslation and questionable reporting from Consequence of Sound, he and Yorke had to clarify the band’s plans on Twitter. Greenwood tweeted that Radiohead have recorded several songs for the new album, but they still have to “go through it all to see if it’s any good.” He also stated that they hope to tour next year, but there are no official show dates yet. Yorke then joined Greenwood in calling out Consequence of Sound, adding that the album is definitely not finished and asking the music publication to “check [their] facts.”  

3. Foo Fighters collaborated with Ben Kweller for five new tracks

While performing at Austin City Limits, Dave Grohl told the crowd that the Foo Fighters recorded five new tracks with singer-songwriter Ben Kweller on Saturday after a chance encounter in the studio with his “old friend.” After hearing Kweller harmonize with the vocals he was recording, Grohl told him, “Get your ass in the vocal booth right now.” Grohl then had Kweller perform on stage with the band just one week after collaborating with his high school nemesis at their Memphis show.  

4. Red Hot Chili Peppers will play an exclusive benefit show

Red Hot Chili Peppers bassist Flea is continuing to do some awesome stuff outside his beekeeping work- he has been spearheading the band’s support for the Silverlake Conservatory of Music. Tomorrow, the Red Hot Chili Peppers are supporting the organization by playing a 300-seat benefit show for the organization in a Los Angeles warehouse. Flea contributed to the organization’s creation in 2001 due to his commitment to their mission of providing music education to underserved individuals.  

5. FFS share music video for “Call Girl”

FFS, the supergroup consisting of Franz Ferdinand and Sparks, may have lost Smash or Trash with “Call Girl” in June, but maybe the outcome would’ve been different if this video had been released sooner. In the video, all six members dance to the track in front of increasingly distorted imagery as a female hand swipes across the screen. It’s a whimsical video that gives us another opportunity to judge Franz Ferdinand’s dancing skills.
