HEADLINES OF THE WEEK
1. Lana del Rey releases new single “Honeymoon”
Lana del Rey finally shared with us the title track of her upcoming album, Honeymoon. This first single is slow, soaring, mournful, poignant: “Everything you do is elusive to even your honey dew,” she sings. Once again, it appears, love is tortured and beautiful for Miss del Rey. And, to be honest, we wouldn’t like it if it were anything else.
So far, she has only released a lyric video, but the beginning gives us a teaser of the upcoming full video. And this song reassures us that the Lana we know and love is back for the new album, set to be released in early September.
2. Wilco surprise album drop: Star Wars
What do Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Wilco all have in common? If you read the heading (or the news), you probably already know: they all drop albums at unexpected times. Wilco released a new album–their first new music in four years–on their website yesterday for free. For FREE. No streaming, no money, just a direct download. It’s called Star Wars with no apparent connection to the movie epic. But who knows? If you listen hard enough maybe you’ll find one. Also, there’s a cat on the cover–and who can argue with that?
3. New Chvrches album on its way; makes a splash.
In the last week, Chvrches has announced a new album, titled Every Open Eye, and released the first single off said album, “Leave a Trace.” The electronic/pop band from Glasgow, Scotland, last came out with their first album The Bones of What You Believe in 2013.
“Leave a Trace” is a little poppy, a little chill, and features singer Lauren Mayberry’s distinctive melodic vocals. The new album will be out on September 25th.Check out their hit single from their first album, “The Mother We Share,” below:
4. New Gorillaz album on its way
We can’t say we miss the Gorillaz, because, honestly, we never stopped listening to “Feel Good, Inc.,” or “Clint Eastwood.” But we’re just as excited to start listening to the songs off of their new album, just announced for release in 2016.
Depending on whom you talk to, Gorillaz is one of the most creative or weird bands around. Jamie Hewlett, the mastermind behind the animated (!?!?!) band, has stated his intentions to begin recording in September. Gorillaz last released music in 2011 with the album The Fall.
5. Arcade Fire film: The Reflektor Tapes
Arcade Fire will release a film to follow up on their last album, Reflektor, called The Reflektor Tapes. It was announced last year, and it’s finally almost close enough to touch: the movie will be in theaters September 24th. Curious for a sneakpeek? The film already has multiple trailers and more info on its website.
One of the most intriguing parts about all this is that the film will be directed by Khalil Joseph, previously known for working with Kendrick Lamar and jazz/hip-hop/electro sensation Flying Lotus. We’re honestly not sure what to expect, but it can only be good.
