The Rhode Island Cape Verdean Independence Festival took place this past Sunday, the 5th of July in India Point Park. This celebration marked exactly forty years of Cape Verde’s independence from Portugal down to the day (July 5th, 1975). The festival was specially dedicated to Norberto Tavares, a Cape Verdean musician–with a career also spanning forty years–and activist for social justice in Cape Verde, who lived in New Bedford until his death in December 2010. He is the namesake of the Norberto Tavares Foundation based in East Providence, a non-profit that provides music education to young people. The warm, sunny weather was ideal for a festival with games and food scattered throughout the park and live acts playing on the main stage to an enthusiastic crowd. The BRU Crew also had a tent at the festival, where they were giving away tickets Chris Brown’s concert August 29th at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Ma.
