Providence rapper, spoken word artist, activist, screenwriter, and composer B. Dolan came to WBRU to show us what he’s been working on for his upcoming album release, Kill the Wolf. The session featured twerking (by B. himself), B.’s “tween consultant” (aka his cousin), and the premiere of two songs, “Stay Inspired” and “These Rooms.” The lighting in the station, thanks to our Media Director, Sam, keeps getting better and better—B. and his backing band were highlighted dramatically by red and yellow spotlights and a tiny disco ball as Sam balanced precariously to catch the perfect angle (check it out in the videos below!).
For the first two songs, B., not constrained by a stand mic, utilized his space. His gestures appeared to grasp for words, his precise movements illustrating every word and conducting the rhythm. Some of the songs are so new that he’s still trying to memorize the lyrics, but words are no problem by the time he performs. He is eloquent, insightful, and playful. It’s easy to see why B. Dolan has been completely dominating Smash or Trash.
Don’t miss the release of Kill the Wolf on Speech Development and Strange Famous Records 7/10 – and be sure to catch the release show at The Met with appearances by Dropdead, Ask the Dead, Sage Francis, and Roz Raskin on 7/11!
