The Wrap-Up brings you the 5 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases.
HEADLINES OF THE WEEK
1. The Foo Fighters play a surprise concert The Foo Fighters have been a constant in music news this past year, from their miniseries Sonic Highways to the slow trickle teasers leading up to the release of their album by the same name in November. And now this: “An Evening with Foo Fighters In the Round.” The band plans to play a special concert at the L.A. Forum this Saturday with $10 of the $50 ticket price going to music-related charities. The Foo Fighters will start their much-anticipated Sonic Highways tour immediately following the concert. They will begin in Chile and continue on through South America, New Zealand, Australia and Europe before returning to the U.S. for the North American portion of their tour just in time for the 4th of July. According to Rolling Stone, they plan to celebrate their homecoming with “a motorcycle rally, fireworks, barbecue and a number of special guests: Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Heart, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, LL Cool J with DJ Z-Trip, Trouble Funk and Trombone Shorty.” 2. Fall Out Boy’s new single “Irresistible”“Irresistible” follows on the heels of four other recently shared songs from Fall Out Boy’s upcoming album release American Beauty/American Psycho: “Immortals,” “Centuries,” “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” and “American Beauty/American Psycho.” The track blasts its message of poison romance with horn-driven passion and lines like “I love the way you hurt me, baby.” Bassist/lyricist Pete Wentz said the song was inspired by the mutually destructive, punk-rock love affair between Sid Vicious and Nancy Spungen.
3. Chvrches perform “The Mother We Share” in Grand Central Station
Last November Chvrches filmed the pilot for a series titled NY Live in Concert, which had them performing “The Mother We Share” in Grand Central Station. The video is now available online to watch, though Chvrches tweeted that people should “wait for the real deal” because the final version isn’t yet up. The concept behind the show is a rotating group of artists, reportedly including Foster The People, Demi Lovato, Train, and Coheed & Cambria, who will perform at different locations around Manhattan. Check out the show’s Instagram account for updates, photos and videos.
4. Musicians pay their respects to the victims of the Charlie Hebdo massacre
Following Wednesday’s deadly terrorist attack on the French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo–which resulted in the death of 12 people, including the editor and three cartoonists–people across the world have spoken out about the tragedy through social media and protests. Frank Turner joined thousands in Trafalger Square in London as they raised their pens in solidarity and others, including Belle and Sebastian, posted on Twitter.
5. Coachella and Govorner’s Ball lineups announced
This week two of the biggest summer music festivals released their preliminary lineups–Coachella and The Govornor’s Ball.
The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, held in Indio, California, will take place over two weekends in April and will feature artists such as (get ready for a long list) Interpol, Jack White, Hozier, Florence and the Machine, St. Vincent, Marina and the Diamonds, Vance Joy, alt-J, War on Drugs, Caribou, and The Weeknd.
On the other side of the US, The Governor’s Ball in NYC is happening this year June 5-7 and boasts a similarly awesome crowd of artists: The Black Keys, Florence and the Machine, Björk, Vance Joy, Future Islands, and The Decemberists, among others.
Stereogum’s Tom Breihan argues in his hilarious comparison of the two events that Coachella seems to take the cake lineup-wise, but we’ll let you decide for yourself.
