Zach, Matt, Haley, and Colin of We Built the Moon came into the studio last week for an extra long and extra playful HomeBRU’d session. From the start, they were jumping around, strumming and playing before the amps were even plugged in. ““Let us know when you dudesicles are ready!” they called.
They might have been energetic, but the band has an incredible commitment to their sound and strove for only the best. They practiced their harmonies in between recording, taking a couple takes to make sure they got each song right. Of course, to the untrained (i.e. me), every take sounded awesome—but they knew when they had hit the right notes. Or, at least, when they got “close enough for rock-and-roll” as Colin, guitarist and vocalist, declared after “More Than A Friend.”
When they weren’t making sweet, sweet music, the band sprinkled the session with improv’d lyrics and a sense of humor that should probably stay off the Internet. Have you ever heard Panic! at the Disco songs with the lyrics changed to a story about walking in on your parents? Yeah, I hadn’t either.
Besides the extracurricular experimenting with mid-2000s covers, WBTM’s songs were danceable, fun, and subtle alt-pop-rock. The tempo shifts helped make the music lively and engaging. Some of the most moving moments, though, occurred in the a capella harmonies featuring Colin and the newest member, Haley (who, apparently, was sick that night—can you tell? I sure can’t).
By the third song, the band had gotten comfortable. “Are you gonna videotape our feet?” asked Colin before he kicked off his shoes. We said we might—but we don’t have anything against socks! Their comfort shone through in the playing, and the session ended on a high note.
To hear WBTM rocking out, check out the videos below. We edited out most of the dirty jokes, though, so if you want the full experience, buy tickets now for WBRU Presents: The Mowgli’s, Satellites Fall, and We Built the Moon at The Met on Wednesday, 11/12! You don’t want to miss this great line-up or getting to see the people who – maybe – built the moon. Buy your tickets here.
