“Zombie” – The Cranberries
“In your head, in your head, zombie, zombie, zombie”
Startin’ off strong with a WBRU classic. This song doesn’t need much of an explanation as to why it’s on this playlist. The word “zombie” is sung 12 times. We counted.
Also, not sure what’s going on in the video. Potential Halloween costume, anyone?
“Glory and Gore” – Lorde
“And how it plays out / Now we’re in the ring / And we’re coming for blood”
It’s very unclear whether Lorde is actually human or not.
“Demons” – Imagine Dragons
“Don’t get too close, It’s dark inside / It’s where my demons hide, It’s where my demons hide”
Don’t be fooled by the catchy melody — these are some grim lyrics. Granted, it’s more about symbolic demons, but those are fairly (if not more) scary.
“Come With Me Now” – KONGOS
“I tried to sell my soul last night / Funny, he wouldn’t even take a bite / Far away / I heard him say (Come with me now) / Don’t delay / I heard him say (Come with me now)”
We met KONGOS when they played our Dunkin Donuts Summer Concert Series this year. Pretty chill guys. You couldn’t even tell they had a brush with the Devil.
“Welcome to the Black Parade” – My Chemical Romance
“Because one day I’ll leave you / A phantom to lead you in the summer / To join The Black Parade”
My Chemical Romance were dressed as skeletons for probably 73% of 2007 as they toured and promoted the album “Welcome to the Black Parade.”

“Dragula” – Rob Zombie

Alright, it’s been awhile since this gem graced the airwaves of WBRU, but we gotta bring it back from the dead since this is probably the time of the year when Rob Zombie is most relevant.
See also: “Living Dead Girl” …and the rest of Rob Zombie’s discography. Like the previously mentioned MCR, it seemed to be Halloween all day every day for Rob Zombie.
“Dangerous” – Big Data (feat. Joywave)
“And now they’re coming, yeah, now they’re coming out from the shadows”
It’s hard to tell whether we should be scared of whatever’s chasing Big Data or Big Data. Either way, creepy. Along with this bloody music video.
Also the guy from Joywave looks like he’s perpetually wearing a Kip from Napoleon Dynamite costume.
“Lake of Fire” – Nirvana
“Now the people cry and the people moan / And they look for a dry place to call their home / And try to find some place to rest their bones / While the angels and the devils try to make them their own / … / They go down to the lake of fire and fry / Won’t see them again ’till the fourth of July”
Yeah, so maybe this song is a Meat Puppets cover. But you can’t *not* mention Nirvana. They deserve credit for getting this song to chart.
“Black Out Days” – Phantogram
“You should save your eyes / A thousand voices howling in my head / Speak in tongues / …. / Would all the stars be shining bloody red?”
This imagery is pretty dark. Which one would expect with a song called “Black Out Days.”
“Monster” – Paramore
“I’ll stop the whole world, I’ll stop the whole world / From turning into a monster eating us alive / Don’t you ever wonder how we survive?”
I’m totally okay with Hayley Williams protecting me from monsters.
