Throwback Thursday: This Week in History

THIS WEEK IN HISTORY

1964: The Temptations record their hit song, ‘My Girl,’ which goes on to be their first US number one.

1965: Towards the end of a long European tour, Roger Daltry punches Keith Moon and is temporarily kicked out of The Who. (Moon was probably seeing stars after that.)

1969: The Beatles release their 11th album, ‘Abbey Road.’

1980: Bob Marley collapses while on a jog in Central Park. He is diagnosed with cancer and plays his last ever concert two nights later in Pittsburgh.

1980: Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham dies at age 32. Known for his fantastic live performances on ‘Moby Dick’ in which solos would last up to 30 minutes, Bonham is forever immortalized as one of the greatest drummer of all time, and was commemorated with a signature Ludwig kit in 2007.

1986: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off send the Beatles’ ‘Twist and Shout’ back to the US singles chart over 25 years after its initial release.

1987: American jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius dies after getting in a fight with a bouncer at a club in Florida.

1988: Bobby McFerrin’s ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’ become the first ever a capella song to reach #1 on a Billboard chart.

1990: Drummer Dave Grohl auditioned for Nirvana and was instantly given the job.

1991: Nirvana releases ‘Nevermind.’ The album has now sold over 30 million copies worldwide. The iconic album artwork was inspired by a documentary Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl saw on water births.

1999: Diana Ross is arrested after claiming that a security guard at London’s Heathrow Airport grabbed her breasts. Ross retaliated by rubbing the security guard down.

2003: A report about artists’ backstage requests to different venues was published. Here are some of our favorites:

• Limp Bizkit requested that every lamp in the room be dimmable.
• Mariah Carey refused to drink out of any straw that was not a bendy straw.
• Van Halen insisted that they have a plate of celery backstage with the celery trimmed, not peeled.
• Barry Manilow demanded a consistent 65 degrees kept in his room at all times.
• The Red Hot Chili Peppers requested a meditation room and a variety of aromatherapy candles.
