We took a trip out to mansfield this weekend to catch Paramore and Fall Out Boy with New Politics at the Xfinity Center and had an awesome time!
It was a gorgeous night and perfect weather to hang out at the open-aired xfinity center. New Politics hit the stage first and offered up a lively opening performance. With backflips and other arial feats, the band impressed us with their moves. Singer David Boyd even crowd walked into the audience and sang among fans part-way through the set!
Paramore was next to hit the stage as the sun began to set, and boy did they BLOW ME AWAY! Paramore offered up an extremely personable and intimate set, quite the feat for such a large venue. Singer Hayley Williams summed it up great when she announced, “You, on the lawn… Are as much a part of this show as you… in the front… I want you singing, moving, doing what you gotta do to be a part of this because you just are!”
Williams also spoke highly of playing in the area, commenting on the “core family” they had in the RI/MA area. To those who hadn’t seen Paramore perform before, Williams welcomed them into their family, adding, “you may not have 100% come to see us but you are 100% in.”
As is somewhat tradition, Paramore brought up some lucky fans to perform “Mis Biz” with them about halfway through their set. This time it was a sign made by the “LOL Sisters” that won over the band and scored them a place on stage with the act and their own “Golden Mics,” which represented “your voice… and every single one of you has one,” says Williams, who encouraged us to never let anyone makes us feel that our ideals aren’t important.
Overall an incredible and exciting performance by Paramore. I was sad to see it come to a close. But I couldn’t grieve too much before I was jolted back to stage by the booming acoustics of Fall Out Boy.
I’m not usually one to wear earplugs in the pit, but when Fall Out Boy’s set kicked off with booming cracks of fireworks and other explosives, I began to second guess my choice. My ears may still be ringing 2 days later, but I suppose it was worth it!
The visuals of the set were just as impressive as the acoustics. With seven interacting and rotating screens on stage, it was hard to know where to look without feeling like you were missing something. I was almost excited to get out of the pit and take a step back so as to soak it all up — a great problem to have with a large area such as xfinity. It was clear that we had another set that aimed to give those fans back on the lawn as great of an experience as those right up front.
That being said, it was hard to catch the splendor in any one shot. The band members moved around so much and so quickly, with so many visuals behind them, it was hard to get them standing still long enough for a good photo! Nevertheless, Fall Out Boy had me believing in Rock and Roll once again, with old classics I had all but forgotten about and some new hits that kept me on my toes and dancing on my feet.
At one point, we were told that “Maybe the dream is dead,” and that, “Maybe shits gonna get a little harder before it gets better… Sometimes before it gets better the darkness gets bigger” A bit of a dark statement, but perfectly applicable to rock and what Fall Out Boy’s trying to do with their music. I found myself in bed later that night, thinking back on the opinions of the group with a smile on my face.
The smile was not a fluke. It was a great night and I was so grateful to the bands, Livenation, and the Xfinity Center for letting us cover the epic event! Check out more photos below, and let us know what you think of the resurgence of rock in the comments!
