WBRU Dunkin' Donuts Summer Concert Series Artist #1: New Politics

“We’re just a little crazy,” explains David Boyd, front man of Copenhagen, Denmark’s own New Politics.  Over the past couple of years, the band has backed this claim up with their rapid rise to fame in the United States and the release of their high-energy sophomore album A Bad Girl in Harlem this May. Boyd met guitarist/keyboardist Søren Hansen when each was writing songs for solo albums just under 5 years ago.  In 2009, they sent in two tracks to Danish National Radio’s “Career Cannon” competition – basically the Danish version of WBRU’s Rock Hunt – and were one of the four winners out of over 900 entering bands.  That fall, they signed with RCA and soon embarked on a US tour.  After coming to New York City to tour, New Politics embraced their all-encompassing band motto ‘F*** it’ (because ‘YOLO’ hasn’t made it over to Denmark yet), and decided to stay here in the states, dropping their debut self-titled album in 2010. While the first album was written in a basement in Denmark by self-admittedly rebellious, angry, questioning Danes, their second effort reflects the mixed experiences of being a young signed band in America living out the dream of becoming famous.  Although they quickly were able to hook up with Long Island-local drummer Louis Vecchio, New Politics make no pretense of having an easy ride to the top.  The band frequently talks about the culture shock of not knowing anyone in the big city; of months spent living off of ramen noodles while crammed into their small apartment in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. But make no mistake, this trio is loving their journey and is eager to share their excitement with fans at concert halls and festivals around the globe.  New Politics have played with 30 Seconds to Mars, Neon Trees, Dirty Heads, and Twenty One Pilots, and are now embarking on a massive tour with Fall Out Boy.  See them live, and you’ll see why they are one of the most talked about, crazy young bands out there.
