Quite a bit has been going on in the music world lately- festivals are beginning, new albums are being announced left and right, and remixes and covers promise to rule the summer. Here’s a quick run-down of the coolest new music.
Metric has released “Speed the Collapse,” the second single from Synthetica, their newest album out June 12. This one is much more upbeat and positive than the first single, “Youth Without Youth”. Listen to it here.
Yeasayer has announced a new album to follow 2010’s wildly popular Odd Blood. The new album, out August 21, is called Fragrant World. You can listen to the first single “Henrietta” here, which, yes, is a reference to Henrietta Lacks- the woman who’s cells allowed doctors to cure Polio and other diseases. I’m not quite sure what kind of vibe that presents for the rest of the album, but the single is great.
Finally, have you ever been playing a video game and wished the soundtrack were better? Ever want Radiohead’s Kid A or Ok Computer to be playing in the background? Well composer Quinton Sung did- and he created something awesome. Stream near-perfect 8-bit renditions of the albums here and here.
Finally, four great new albums are currently either streaming in their entirety online or available for purchase/to listen to on Spotify.

Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros have committed to releasing two new albums in 2012- no word on the second one, but the first, Here, also out May 29, is available on iTunes, Amazon, and on their website. Get a free taste of Here on Soundcloud with “Man on Fire,” the first track on the album, released as a single two months ago.
And finally, you can listen to my personal favorite of these three, Sigur Rós’ Valtari, also also out on May 29, here. Also, check out the first music official music video released by the band of the second track on the album, Ekki múkk, here on YouTube. While the album is the typical moody, ambient perfection of sound that Sigur Rós puts out, it’s still different enough to keep you listening.
