The Wrap-Up brings you the 10 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases.
Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, and The Smiths have been nominated to be part of the class of 2015 for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Lou Reed, Sting, N.W.A., the Paul Butterfield Blues Band, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Kraftwerk, Chic, Bill Withers, the Marvelettes, War, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and the Spinners were nominated as well.
For the third consecutive year, you can vote for one of the nominees as part of a collective fan ballot that will be counted along with the ballots of music industry specialists, artists, and historians. Fan votes will be accepted through December 9.
2. WBRU Birthday Bash Headliners the Dirty Heads returned to late-night
The Dirty Heads performed “My Sweet Summer” and “Franco Eyed” on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Wednesday. It was their first performance on Kimmel since 2010. If you want to experience their live energy in person, check them out at WBRU’s Birthday Bash on November 3 at Lupo’s. We only have a few weeks until the Birthday Bash, so get your tickets soon!
3. Bleachers, KONGOS, Vance Joy, and CHVRCHES will headline a VH1 concert
WBRU favorites Bleachers, KONGOS, Vance Joy, and CHVRCHES will join Sam Smith, A Great Big World, Tove Lo, American Authors, Mary Lambert, and Echosmith for VH1’s annual You Outta Know concert on November 13 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City. You can watch them perform at 9 PM ET on VH1 on November 13.
4. Weezer rocked out with a dual guitar solo on Jimmy Kimmel Live
In conjunction with the release of their ninth album, Everything Will Be Alright In The End, on Tuesday Weezer performed “Ain’t Got Nobody” on Jimmy Kimmel Live. “Ain’t Got Nobody” is the first song on the new album and features an awesome double guitar solo, which when performed live, sounds even better.
You can hear Weezer perform this song live during their fall tour, which features New England shows in Boston and Connecticut.
5. Next week will be the Foo Fighters’ week on the Late Show with David Letterman
Starting on Monday, the Foo Fighters will perform with special (TBA) guests on the Late Show with David Letterman for five consecutive nights. These performances come in anticipation of the release of their new album, Sonic Highways, on November 10.
6. Lorde spoke out about her South Park episodes
For two consecutive weeks, Lorde has been the subject of jokes on South Park. Although she’s not a South Park fan, upon hearing about the episodes on Thursday, Lorde tweeted her reaction.
7. Jack White chatted on Ellen and will perform huge shows in New York City and Nashville
On Thursday, Jack White participated in a brief interview on Ellen and performed “Alone in My Home” as well as “Would You Fight For My Love?” Talk show interviews are rare for Jack White and during the interview he discussed how he injured his ankle on tour.
On Monday, White also announced that he will perform at the historic Madison Square Garden in New York on January 30 as well as the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville on January 28.
8. Butch Vig discussed how Nirvana’s Nevermind was influenced by a space heater
Butch Vig, the producer of Nirvana’s legendary album Nirvana and member of Garbage, discussed his experience with Nirvana at the Yellow Phone Music Conference in Milwaukee. In his speech, he revealed that during the creation of Nevermind the band “rehearsed every day for six months, like 10 hours a day” and that “part of the reason they rehearsed for 10 hours a day was they were living in a really floppy, shitty apartment up in the northwest, and the rehearsal space had a space heater.”
9. Beck performed a nine-minute version of “Where It’s At”
On Sunday, Beck kicked off the 40th season of the PBS concert series Austin City Limits. During the hour-long episode, Beck performed songs from the entirety of his career and even featured a nine-minute version of the 1996 hit, “Where It’s At.”

10. Julian Casablancas explained the unusual sound of his new album
In an interview with NME, the Strokes’ frontman Julian Casablancas explained that his new album, Tyranny, with Julian Casablancas + The Voidz was created ” to make edgier, interesting stuff mainstream.” He elaborated, stating, “If anything, I was trying to make Tyranny interesting and catchy. We may have travelled too far into the future for some minds, but to me it’s totally to help train mainstream ears.”
Regarding the Strokes’ future for 2015, he stated: “I imagine there’ll be Strokes activity throughout the year and then hopefully – maybe – an album in the new year. That’s the dream. Am I saying that’s what’s happening? No. But I’m saying that’s definitely, probably, in everybody’s minds.”
Hozier – Hozier
