The Wrap-Up brings you the 5 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases.

HEADLINES OF THE WEEK

1. You can now stay the night in Kurt Cobain’s old apartment & listen to his unreleased Beatles demo

The Los Angeles apartment that once housed Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love now belongs to Brandon Kleiman, who is listing it on Airbnb for $150 per night. Cobain inhabited the apartment between 1991-1992. In the listing, “Kurt Cobain’s Private 1b + 1bth,” Kleiman states, “At the time, Kurt was focused on song writing and his artwork, much of which was created in the apartment. He was particularly into painting during this time and even decorated the walls in the living room and bedroom. His favorite spot in the house: the bathtub. In it, he wrote the song ‘Heart-Shaped Box.’” Earlier this week, a demo of Cobain covering the Beatles’ “And I Love Her” was released. The cover is raw, simple, and moving. The director of the Cobain-centered documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck uncovered the demo while working on the film.

2. Matt and Kim bring a balloon party to Jimmy Kimmel

To promote their latest album New Glow, Matt and Kim dropped by Jimmy Kimmel Live to perform two of the album’s especially animated songs, “Get It” and “Make a Mess.” For their performance of “Get It,” Matt and Kim gave the audience a ton of balloons and the result was (of course) an insanely fun atmosphere. Let’s hope they bring balloons to Lupo’s on June 13 for our Summer Kick-Off Show, which will also feature the Kooks. Get your tickets HERE before they sell out!

3. Florence and the Machine release “As Far As I Could Get”

In honor of Record Store Day, Florence and the Machine released a new song, “As Far As I Could Get,” on a special 12-inch that also contained “What Kind of Man.” If you couldn’t get the exclusive vinyl for yourself, don’t worry – “As Far As I Could Get” will also be on the deluxe edition of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

4. Details on Mumford and Sons’ hip hop project were released

Last week, we reported that Mumford and Sons frontman Marcus Mumford was learning how to “chop up beats” from esteemed rapper and producer 88-Keys. After the release of their new song “Snake Eyes,” 88-Keys spoke to NME and revealed more information about his work with Mumford. Regarding how they met, he stated:
One fateful night, around 11.30PM, when I was heading to bed I got an email from a really good friend of mine called Izzy [Izvor Zivkovic], who also manages my best friend Kanye West. He sent an email saying that he had a really good friend himself who wanted to know a little bit more about hip-hop production and sampling and just the whole gambit of what producers do. He said he couldn’t think of a better person than myself, so he emailed the both of us and asked if I was up to meeting with his friend the following day. Any friend of Izzy’s is a friend of mine so I agreed to it. He told me Marcus is part of the band Mumford & Sons. I’ve always seen their name around but I’ve never actually listened to any of their music, only because I’m really completely tuned out of pretty much anything current, music wise.
Keys also revealed that he taught the whole band how to create sampled loops in the studio and that they are collaborating on something that he is unable to fully disclose. This project is different from the collaboration he’s doing with Marcus Mumford only. Keys described his work with Marcus as the following:
I can tell you what it’s going to sound like, it’s going to sound dope as fuck [laughs]. It’s going to be he and I involved in it. Not to toot my own horn but pretty much everything that I’ve put my hands on production wise is pretty top notch material, with the exception of maybe my first beat that I placed in life, which was back in 1997 or so. He obviously brings a lot to the table as well. The masses obviously love what he does. Not to sound cliché but I would say that the possibilities are endless.

5. Weezer premiere new song for Record Store Day

Weezer also released a Record Store Day single, “Everybody Needs Salvation.” The new song appeared on a 7-inch that was exclusively made available to their fan club. Weezer created “Everybody Needs Salvation” while putting together Everything Will Be Alright in the End and the track definitely fits the album’s sound.
