The Wrap-Up brings you the 5 largest music news stories of the week as well as information about new album and music video releases.

HEADLINES OF THE WEEK

1. Dave Grohl takes the throne…literally.

As we have mentioned before, Dave Grohl was recently waylaid by a broken leg. He’s back–or, at least, in some fashion. Purple cast stuck straight out, Grohl took the stage by throne for the most recent Foo Fighters shows in Washington, D.C. on July 4th and New Jersey on July 6th. A sea of guitars stick out from underneath; his (healthy) left foot pounds the ground despite the immobilization of his right foot. In short, nothing, not even extreme physical injury, stops Dave Grohl. However, he did take a more mundane approach when he retreated to two folding chairs for a cover of Neil Young’s “Cinnamon Girl,” also on July 4th. Check out the video below!

2. New Jack White and Dead Weather album

Jack White seemingly has a never-ending stream of creativity. Just a month after being inducted into the Nashville Hall of Fame, and a couple months after announcing a massive joint documentary/album release with Robert Redford, he’s back. A new album, titled Dodge & Burn, with alt-blues-rock supergroup The Dead Weather will be released in September. The Dead Weather is led by the Kills’ Alison Mosshart. Unfortunately, we probably won’t get to see them in concert anytime soon: the band has announced that they won’t be touring for Dodge & Burn.

3. New single released by Crystal Castles

Singer Alice Glass departed the band last October.

Crystal Castles’ new single is a beautiful follow up to their earlier upbeat, drum-driven alt-dance tracks. The single, titled “Deicide,” is a little more aggressive and has a little more edge to it. We’re excited about the new direction–will it be continued in their fourth studio album? How will their music be affected by the departure of former singer, Alice Glass, and by the arrival of new singer, up til now only known as “Edith”?  Listen to the new song here, and we’ll be hoping for some answers on the new album!

4. Brandon Flowers among artists to feature on new New Order album

A couple of weeks ago, we gave you a Brandon Flowers x New Order edition of Under the Covers. It turns out that was just the beginning of the artists’ crossover: For the first time since 2005, New Order will release a new album, titled “Music Complete,” in September. The album features Flowers, known for both his solo work and for fronting The Killers, as well as Iggy Pop and La Roux. Back in January, Rolling Stone reported that New Order keyboardist Gillian Gilbert and drummer Stephen Morris (who married in 1994!) can’t stop talking about music:
It’s like, blimey, we did it again! Once we watched a box set of Breaking Bad, and we shut up while doing that. We’re just waiting for another one to divert us from going on and on about New Order.

5. Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam on board for Chris Martin-curated festival

The all-star lineup for New York’s Global Citizen Festival, a one-day extravaganza to benefit anti-poverty organization Global Citizen, was just released, and it’s great. Beyoncé, Ed Sheeran, Pearl Jam, and Coldplay will be playing Central Park on September 26th. It’s not surprising that the lineup knocks it out of the park–the artists were curated and invited by Coldplay frontman (and Global Citizen Creative Director) Chris Martin. The best part? Anyone can earn a free ticket by completing anti-poverty actions. Check out Global Citizen for more information about the festival and their aggressive anti-poverty mission!
