Everything Le Roxy Pro does seems relaxed but polished. Their debut self-titled album, which came out earlier this fall, features low-key “East Coast surf jams” and lots of references to beach culture. The tracks are echoing and optimistic but tinged with melancholy and minor keys. Brent, Dave, and Sam brought that relaxed atmosphere to the station when they came in last week to play three songs off the album.
Brent, guitarist/vocalist formerly of 2010 Rock Hunt winner the Wandas settles in right away; the others search for Chinese takeout. Successful in their quest, Dave and Sam return and the three introduce themselves. “We’re Le Roxy Pro,” says Dave, pronouncing the “Le” like “luh.” “Huh. I always pronounce it as ‘lay,’” comments Brent. “Nah, that’s the plural in French! You gotta get that French pronunciation.” Luh? Lay? Lah? We conclude that they all work. Once that’s cleared up, we’re ready to get down to business.
Dave slings the keyboard over his knees; Brent and Sam just have their acoustic guitars. They mess around with the different keyboard sounds a bit during soundcheck (was that some phantom of the opera organ right there?). After a quick break for crab Rangoon and fortune cookies, the three are ready to play.
Their set is, unsurprisingly, mellow, easy-going, and composed. It features stripped down versions of three of the recorded songs. The harmonies are on point, the acoustic guitars sound great, and the keys are simple but beautiful. Check out the videos below to see their incredible live performance.
Listen in to WBRU everyday this week at 9:00 to catch Le Roxy Pro on Homebru’d, and get your tickets now for their December 11th show in Cambridge, MA.
