Yesterday 24 teens took sail on board the SSV Oliver Perry, Rhode Island’s official educational vessel. Students between the ages of 13 and 18 launched their first sail on the Perry this morning, leaving from Boston Harbor. Executive Director of the Perry, Jessica Wurzbacher says the voyage offers a unique learning opportunity.
“The importance isn’t learning to sail, but it’s learning from sailing. So some of these students may never go and sail on the square rigged vessel again, but it’s about what they’ve learned about themselves, about others, along the way while they’re learning to sail the vessel.”
The Perry is the largest civilian sailing school vessel in the U.S., at 200 feet long and 13 stories high. Students in this week’s program will sail along with a crew and captain for eleven nights. The ship will stop in several ports on its way to Portsmouth New Hampshire, where it will arrive August 10th. They arrived in Provincetown this afternoon.
