Summer reading program begins at Providence Community Library

The Providence Community Library’s summer reading program is expanding outside of libraries this year. Providence Community Library will also be taking their mobile library to Providence schoolyards, so students can check out books in their own neighborhoods. The program prevents students form losing their reading skills while they’re out of school by giving them access to reading material. “We work with them so that they read about at least 20 minutes every day and they’re given incentives, prizes, and we provide entertainment to help them along in their reading,” says Development Director Steve Kumins. A fundraiser earlier this month raised $50,000 for the library, some of which will be used to fund the summer reading program.  The event honored Congressman David Cicilline and former State Representative Linda Kushner who helped found the library. The library is hoping to double its reach to children this summer, helping students maintain their reading skills.
