Police launch “Border to Border” seat belt campaign

One of the biggest travel weekends of the year is coming up. The East Providence and Seekonk police are teaming up to make sure drivers are buckling up and staying safe this Memorial Day weekend. “We’re establishing a border to border zone of zero tolerance. We’re going to aggressively deploy and target occupants or drivers who do not buckle up,” says East Providence Police Chief Christopher Parella. The department enforces seat belt laws year round, but received national and state money to deploy extra police officers ahead of this busy weekend. These officers will be working strictly to enforce seat belt laws. “We don’t want to give tickets out.  But if the threat of a ticket is what it’s going to take to get you to restrain and it saves a life, it’s worth it,” says Parella. The Border to Border campaign runs through June 5th.
